This years sweep of both the Open Nacional and Juniors divisions can only be compared to the greats of surfing past. His repetoire consists of big vertical lips bashes a la Joel Parkinson, sweeping cuttys and large punting aeriels. All this combined with new school Fanningesque flare on the night scene. All other title contenders beware, Rex is a loose canon holding nothing back. With the title of 'Nicaraguan Slater,' the only question is can he take it to the next level?
At the age when most kids are worried about not getting beat up by the school bully, Rex claims to have already surfed the outer reef. A common thing really, just as common as your back yard is 6 foot and glassy all day. The funny thing is that his is. Boasting from an area where mainstream surfing has only been around more or less for five years the simple fact from the previous line might be the answer to the question everybody is asking...how did this kid get so good? Same thing that people said about ten years ago when a kid from Florida started blowing minds out.
For Rex, the ambitions and reality of becoming a professional surfer are within eyesight. His track record is stellar and endless are the victories added to his resume. He has a good head on his shoulders and you can ask anyone the kid is all smiles. As long as he can keep his head straight and focus on the future everyone agrees he just might tbe the first professional surfer from Nicaragua.
